Winter Storm Orlena, a large Nor’easter containing strong winds and heavy snow, caused disastrous impacts across the Tri-State area, as well as the northeast United States from January 31, 2020 to February 3, 2021. The storm contained different precipitation conditions, with many areas receiving changes between snow and a wintry mix (i.e., freezing rain and sleet) a few times a day. Using photo-imagery of the changing ice aggregates, weather station data was compared to the different types of precipitation that occurred and analyzed to gain a better understanding of the impacts of rapid changing winter weather conditions.
