We are pleased to report that the workshop held at Millersville University in the Fabrication Lab housed in the Department of Art and Design was a success and very well received. Sarah Pike, printmaker, and owner of FreeFall Laser lead a two-session visiting artist workshop in integrating new technology with traditional printmaking techniques. In this student-centered workshop Sarah shared her research in laser engraving waterless lithography plates and worked with students to use the process to develop laser-ready files, step tests, and with troubleshooting the files and equipment. Sarah believes strongly in empowering students to understand the relationship between how the laser cutter operates, its effect on materials, and how to advance its application in the fine arts through safe experimentation. Sarah demonstrated her improvisational approaches to image making in which she collaborated with the laser cutter to create one-of-a-kind matrixes that do not exist as digital files. This was a unique opportunity for students to work with one of the top researchers in laser cutting for printmaking and the fine arts.
