Abstract: Abstract: This collaborative study between a Pennsylvania nonprofit and a Latin American governmental health center explores cross cultural participation barriers to mental health support groups for people with diabetes. The research highlights the vital link between diabetes and mental health, especially for indigenous groups, and its relevance in low-resource settings facing a severe diabetes crisis. This mixed-methods research, focusing on medical staff and 13 adult patients, utilized staff interviews, a KAP survey, home visits, and culturally relevant resources to uncovered external challenges like alcohol addiction, socioeconomic constraints, and internal issues such as staff morale and cultural misunderstandings. Bridging gaps through mental health care, addressing stress, and enhancing cultural competence is vital for improving diabetes care in low-resource health centers.
